Global Expert Dr. Kirin Hilliar Conducts Masterclass on ‘Unmasking Lies’ at IILM University Greater Noida The Department of Psychology at IILM University Greater Noida, successfully organized a two-day masterclass on Forensic Psychology titled “Unmasking Lies: Cognitive and Forensic Approaches to Deception Detection.” The session was conducted by Dr. Kirin Fiona Hilliar, Assistant Professor at Heriot-Watt University, Dubai. The masterclass offered an enriching blend of theoretical insights and applied learning, focusing on the interface between psychology and criminal investigation. Dr. Hilliar initiated the session with an engaging icebreaker, remarking, “There are some lies I have told you,” which seamlessly transitioned into the “Two Truths and a Lie” activity. This exercise provided participants with an experiential understanding of identifying subtle behavioural cues associated with deception. A key component of the masterclass involved the analysis of a real-world police interrogation case study. Participants critically examined the suspect’s nonverbal communication, including nuances in tone, facial expressions, and vocal patterns, to identify psychological indicators of deception and evaluate credibility. The programme, attended by undergraduate and postgraduate psychology students, concluded with group presentations and an interactive question-and-answer session on the second day. Discussions extended to contemporary developments and career pathways within the field of forensic psychology. Overall, the masterclass was highly impactful, fostering a deeper appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of deception research, and effectively integrating perspectives from psychology, neuroscience, and criminology.
